Hand load rubbish removal, the skip bin alternative

Updated October 2026

A garage full of clutter before a clean-out

The difference between a skip bin and a hand load crew comes down to one question: who does the lifting? With a skip, you do. The bin arrives, sits on your driveway for days, and every barrow load, every mattress, every awkward wardrobe gets carried and heaved over the side by you. With a hand load service, a truck and crew arrive together, load everything themselves, and drive away the same hour. You point, they carry.

Why people choose hand load over a skip

Where a skip still wins

Fair is fair. If you are mid-renovation and waste will trickle out over two or three weeks, a skip sitting on site earns its keep. The same goes if you genuinely enjoy the loading and your access suits a bin. For everything else, a one-off pile, a clean-out, a deadline, hand loading is usually simpler and often no dearer once permits and your weekend are counted. The numbers are worked through properly in the rubbish removal cost guide.

What a hand load job looks like

You send the form with a line or two about the pile. A local crew calls back, usually asks for a photo, and quotes a price. On the day, two people and a truck arrive, typically an 8 to 12 cubic metre tipper, or a caged ute for small jobs. They load, sweep up, and the rubbish is gone before lunch. Jobs run everywhere from apartment blocks in Cronulla to battleaxe driveways in Kareela and steep blocks around Oyster Bay, places where a skip was never going to fit anyway.

What the crews hand load

Anything covered by our other services: household junk, green waste, renovation debris, appliances and e-waste, and full estate clearances. Mixed loads are fine and normal.

What it costs

Guide pricing only: around $70 to $150 per cubic metre is typical for Sydney hand load services, with minimum callout charges for small pickups. For comparison, a 4 cubic metre skip in NSW commonly starts around $400 before any street permit, and you still do the loading. A same-size hand load job often lands in similar territory with none of the labour. Treat these as ballpark figures, the crew's quote on your actual pile is the real number.

Frequently asked questions

How fast is a typical hand load job?

Most residential loads take 45 minutes to two hours on site. The crew quotes, loads, sweeps and leaves in one visit, compared with the several days a skip sits on your property.

Can they load from inside the house or upstairs?

Yes, that is the whole point of the service. Internal rooms, stairs and long carries are normal. Mention them on the form so the quote allows the time.

Is hand loading dearer than a skip?

Sometimes slightly, sometimes not, once you count the street permit a skip needs, the risk of ordering the wrong size, and your own hours of loading. For one-off piles the totals usually land close together.

What if my pile grows between the quote and the pickup?

Tell the crew when they arrive. They price the extra volume on the spot at the same rate, which is easier than discovering a skip is full with half the pile still on the lawn.
